Plus: A preview of Cuisse De Grenouille's Fall-Winter 2016 collection
Ever seen some well-dressed dude sporting a "Surf In Paris" T-shirt or sweatshirt? Maybe it was at your local coffee joint, maybe it was on Instagram. When you did see it, ever wonder "what's that about?" while simultaneously wishing you had one in your own wardrobe? For the record, the tops in question come from Parisian casualwear brand Cuisse De Grenouille. But before you open your mouth and butcher the label's name, know two things: it's pronounced "Kweece Duh Gren-wee" and means "frog's legs."
A little background: The gentlemen behind the line, brothers Lucas and Severin Bonnichon, are well aware that surf-inspired line coming out of a land-locked city might not make the most sense—on paper. But that's not what the line is about. "'Surf In Paris' is a mentality," says Severin. "We see all these photos of men vacationing in Cannes in the 1960s, and wanted to bring that to clothes." But where the label goes the extra mile is that it kicks the stereotypical snobby Parisian archetype in favor of a warm and inviting spirit that's found in whimsical graphics and retro designs. "We tell our staff in our stores to be friendly, like Americans. We want them to ask customers, 'Hi, how are you? Is there something you're looking for?'," says Severin.
It's that ethos, plus all the hallmarks of any Parisian brand, like slim fits, small shirt collars, and the general feeling that the coolest thing in the world is effortlessly simple items. (Jean jackets, slim chinos, and chambray are all fine, but French jean jackets, slim chinos, and chambray shirts? Now, those are really something.) And to make things even better, for the quality, Cuisse is one of the most reasonably priced French imports on the market today, with jeans and coming in around $100 and sweaters around $140. Even outerwear will only run you in the $500-$600 range. The point is, yes, wearing Cuisse De Grenouille will make you look stylish, but who said looking stylish can't be fun and affordable, too?
